How to Choose a Hearing Aid Battery
With new technology constantly being introduced, there are a growing number of hearing aids that a person can buy. These hearing aids vary widely with how they perform and how they look. What a hearing aid can and can’t do affects the life of a hearing aid battery. So anyone in need of a hearing aid or hearing aid battery should consider how long the battery will last.
One hearing aid battery looks the same as another hearing aid battery - they are tough to tell apart. Luckily, there is a tab on the back of the batteries that is color coded to help people know what type of battery it is. The colors and what they represent are usually: a blue tab on the back of a battery represents C size 675, yellow represents C size 10, brown means C size 312, and orange signifies C size 13.
Once a person discovers which colored hearing aid battery is needed, then the person should consider how long each brand of hearing aid battery lasts. For the most part each battery should last one to two months. The life of the battery is determined by the brand and by how much or how little a hearing aid does.
One part of a hearing aid that can drain a battery is the hearing aid’s microphone. For years the problem with microphones is that they would pick-up sound but the person with the hearing aid has no way of knowing what direction the sound had come from. Now, with new technology, there is a microphone called Behind the Ear or BTE. This type of microphone allows the person to know which direction a particular sound came from. While this technology is great, it does drain the hearing aid battery more than some other types of microphones.
One part of a hearing aid battery that does often affect the life of a hearing aid battery is the microphone in the hearing aid. The microphone is what picks up the sounds. For years hearing aids helped people hear but there was no way of knowing where the sound was coming from. Now, with the new technology, there is a hearing aid called the Behind the Ear or BTE. With this technology people wearing hearing aids can now know the direction where sound is coming from. Of course this type of microphone can drain a battery more than some other types of batteries.
The speaker in the hearing aid is another part that determines the life of the hearing aid battery. Of course the speaker is what transmits the sound from the outside to the person needing the hearing aid. With the new technology with hearing aid speakers many of them are very small and fit right into the ear. The hearing aids with this type of speakers are called RITE (Receiver-in-the-Ear) and they are not much more expensive than other hearing aids with other speakers. They also don’t consume any more of the battery.
People who need to buy a hearing aid need to consider their wants and needs. Another thing they also must consider is the type of hearing aid battery the device takes. Often this factor is overlooked.
The type of hearing aid battery a person buys should be chosen carefully. The factors that need to be considered are the price and the life of the hearing aid battery. A person should shop around and try out different batteries until they find the one that works best and costs the least.
