The most basic no-fault benefit is personal injury protection coverage (PIP). This coverage will pay you, your relative or any other person riding in your car a minimum benefit amount per person for injury, regardless of fault. The level of benefits varies widely among states and may be optional.

The following are types of coverages that may be extended to you under typical personal injury protection coverage:

1. Medical Expense Benefits: This benefit includes all reasonable charges for medical, hospital, surgical, professional nursing, dental, optometric, ambulance, prosthetic services and X-rays.

2. Rehabilitation Expenses Benefit: Rehabilitation, psychiatric, physical and occupational therapy are all included in you rehabilitation expense benefits.

3. Work Loss Benefit: This benefit includes coverage for loss of wages up to a specific limit for a specific time period following injury.

4. Funeral Expense Benefit: Funeral services including burial and cremation expenses up to a specific amount are included in you funeral expense benefits.

5. Survivors Loss Benefit: Provides payments to your surviving spouse or dependents up to a set limit for a predetermined period of time are included survivors loss benefits.

If you live in a state where Personal Injury Protection is optional you may want to consider keeping this coverage as part of your policy. Medical expenses might not be otherwise covered. Many medical insurers refuse to pay for medical claims due to a car accident. You may also have a maximum limit to your medical expenses. Your PIP coverage will be separate from these coverage and not have the same limitations. There are other places in your auto insurance policy you can adjust to help you get cheap car insurance.
